A REVIEW ON INDIGENOUS CATTLE GENETIC RESOURCES IN ETHIOPIA: ADAPTATION, STATUS AND SURVIVAL

Ethiopia is endowed with different Indigenous cattle genetic resources with millions of people directly depending on them. However, despite the potentials of these diversified genetic resources, the huge loss of cattle genetic diversity is becoming a prominent challenge these days. The aim of this review is to show the current status and performance of some selected indigenous cattle breeds of Ethiopia for better understanding of the situation of these breeds for the collective efforts towards conserving and improving the breeds. Based on the review, there are persuasive evidences on the critical situation of the selected indigenous cattle breeds. The facts and figures of the past and current situation of the selected indigenous cattle of Ethiopia showed that the situation of these breeds is very critical. This situation therefore demands the need to devise strategies to conserve and improve the cattle breeds based on the challenges that threatens them. Use of new biological and information technologies is also imperative to facilitate the genetic restoration process. Besides, use of new biological and information technologies which can enhance the conservation and improvement program are crucial. Various ongoing development interventions like Artificial Insemination and introduction of genotypes into new environments that are exacerbating threat of the breeds should totally be avoided by revising and designing sound approaches for cattle Conservation and improvement programs. Strict regulations and by laws should also be in place for illegal movement of breeding cattle to the neighboring countries.

SummaryThis paper summarises preliminary results of a survey conducted as part of a large effort to systematically collate information aimed at assessing the status of cattle genetic resources of sub-Saharan Africa. The 146 indigenous breeds/strains identified from the survey are classified into nine broad groups (Humpless Longhorns, Humpless Shorthorns, Large East African Zebu, Small East African Zebu, West African Zebu, Sanga, Zenga, Recently Derived Breeds and Commercial Composites) some of which are further subdivided into several groups (based on possible genetic relationships) and clusters (based on eco-geographical locations). Each breed is then described in terms of location, physical characteristics, adaptive attributes, if known, current main uses and status in terms of qualitative or quantitative indication of trends, where available, and presence or absence of programmes for its management or further development.

SummaryThe small East African short horned Zebu (SEAZ) is an important source of animal protein in Kenya. This indigenous genotype is well adapted to environmental stresses including endemic diseases of the tropics. However, literature available on its genetic potential is scarce. The Government of Kenya, in order to study this valuable germplasm in a systematic manner, has recently initiated some research and breed improvement programmes. This paper reports on some of the results of this work. Information was obtained-using a structured questionnaire administered to 430 farmers in Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta and Kajiado districts, Kenya. A multi-level stratified sampling technique was used to select the farmers to be interviewed. Utilization and reasons for preference of SEAZ cattle differed across and within districts in rankings. Breeding practicesof IndigenousDraft cattle in North Shoa zone, Amhara region, Ethiopia

The study was conducted North Shoa Zone,Amhara Regional State with the objectives of documenting breeding practice of indigenous draft cattle. The data were collected through semi structured questionnaire, group discussions and field observation. A total of 490 households were randomly selected and interviewed by using pre-tested questioner. Statistical package for social science (SPSS 16) were used to analyze the collected data. The main purpose of keeping cattle was for drought power source (86.9) for farming activity followed by milk production (4.4%), cash income (6.1%), meat production (2.8%) and manure production (2.2%). The result revealed that majority of respondent (65.5%) select indigenous cattle based on draught power. Breeding was predominated by Natural and controlling (60.9%) and most of(67.6 %) of respondents used local bull.The main source of bull (60.0%) for mating was neighbor’s bull. In general indigenous cattle in the study areas were mainly selected and kept for drought power and practice traditional castration method to control the mating system. The Government and the non-government sector should support the farmers and plan to improve the indigenous draft cattle based on the trait preference of farmers.

Breeding practices in indigenous dairy cattle breeds in Northern Amhara, Ethiopia

This study was aimed at understanding of the general indigenous dairy cattle breeding activities of the community and major conformational traits particularly used by smallholder farmers in selecting better indigenous dairy cows. The study was conducted in Fogera, Dembia and Wogera districts of northern Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia. Interviews using pre-tested structured questionnaires and focus group discussions were used to generate the data. SPSS was employed to analyze the data. The most common mating system in all sites was natural controlled mating, but free mating and AI also exist in small frequencies. The first breeding objective of the community was obtaining better milk yield. The farmers' trait preferences was mostly includes higher milk off-take, faster growth rate, adaptability to local feed conditions and diseases, and breeding ability, traction and butter fat yield of the cattle. In doing so, Fogera cattle breed was preferred by most of the participants of the study, due to better expression of the dairy traits. Among the selection criteria of farmers for indigenous dairy cows, navel size, udder and teat size, and pelvic width were commonly stated and hold the first three ranks of selection in all districts.
