OSRS Ice Bursting & Ice Barraging Guide: MM1 & MM2 tunnels (2024)

Ice bursting or barraging refers to the use of ice burst or barrage spells to attack multiple enemies at the same time to earn high magic experience rewards; when done in Kruk's dungeon, it is the fastest way to train magic in Oldschool Runescape.

The Ice Burst spell belongs to a class of spells known as burst spells, which can hit multiple targets with a single cast and can hit up to nine targets in a 3 by 3 area. Barrage spells and ice burst spells are two types of spells that can be used to attack multiple enemies and gain a lot of experience.

Barrage spells are more powerful than burst spells and are the most powerful multi-target spells in Old School Runescape. There are only three barrage and burst spells that are popular for gaining high magic experience when training in the MM1 or MM2 dungeons, and these are the Ice Burst, Ice Barrage, and Shadow Barrage.

General requirements

  1. At Least 70 magic
  2. Desert treasure for ancient magicks to cast multi-target magic spells
  3. Partial completion of Monkey Madness I for Skeletons and Monkey Madness 2 for Maniacal Monkeys
  4. 43 prayer, both maniacal monkeys and skeletons attack using melee so you would need at least 43 prayer to protect melee. Although you can do this method with 43 prayer, a higher prayer level (74+) is highly recommended so you can stay longer when training at either of the dungeons.

Ice burst

OSRS Ice Bursting & Ice Barraging Guide: MM1 & MM2 tunnels (1)

Ice-bursting provides the least amount of experience of the three styles, but it is also the least expensive to train with. Like other burst spells, the ice burst spell is only available in the ancient magic spellbook, so you must first complete the Desert Treasure I quest. It also requires 70 magic to cast and can hit up to 22 enemies in a 3 by 3 clump while restricting their movement for up to 9.6 seconds.

Performing this spell for an extended period is quite costly; it requires four chaos runes, two death runes, and four water runes to cast, which amounts to approximately 634 coins on the grand exchange.

When using the Ice Burst spell, you can gain up to 250,000 experience and spend approximately 3.2 million per hour attacking maniacal monkeys in the Kruk's dungeon, but this is dependent on your gear and efficiency, which is why this guide is useful if you want to train magic using Ice Burst because we will cover the best methods to Ice Burst, the best gear, and the MM1 and MM2 locations.

Ice Barrage

OSRS Ice Bursting & Ice Barraging Guide: MM1 & MM2 tunnels (2)

This is the highest-tier magic spell available in Oldschool Runescape, requiring 94 magic to cast. It has a maximum damage of 30, can hit up to nine enemies at once, and makes them immobile for up to 19.2 seconds. It takes four blood runes, two death runes, and six water runes to cast, and it costs up to 982 coins per cast. When using this spell to attack maniacal monkeys in Kruk's dungeon, you can gain 330,000 experience per hour but it is quite expensive and you can spend approximately 14.5 million per hour when training maniacal monkeys.

Shadow Barrage

OSRS Ice Bursting & Ice Barraging Guide: MM1 & MM2 tunnels (3)

The Shadow Barrage spell is the highest form of shadow spell in Oldschool Runescape, and you can only use it if you have at least 88 magic. This spell reduces your opponent's attack by 15%. Four death runes, three blood runes, four air runes, and three soul runes are required to cast this spell. You can gain 350,000 experience per hour and spend approximately 12 million per hour when training maniacal monkeys.

Switching spells as soon as you have the required levels is recommended to increase overall experience rates when training to 99 magic.

Ice bursting or barraging at MM1

When you visit Ape Atoll via the glider during the Monkey Madness I quest, you unlock the Ape Atoll Dungeon, also known as the MM1 tunnels.Monsters of all kinds abound in this dungeon. Skeletons, on the other hand, can cluster and generally have a low defense against magic, making them one of the best monsters to attack with ice bursts or barrages and earn a lot of experience. The drawback of this method is that skeletons only drop skeletal bones, which cannot be sold or removed from the Ape Atoll dungeon.

This location provides significantly less experience than maniacal monkeys in Kruk's Dungeon, so unless you are unable to complete the Monkey Madness 2 quest for a valid reason, you should switch and train at maniacal monkeys if you want to go for better experience rates when ice bursting or barraging. Depending on your gear and how efficiently you use this method, you should expect to gain 200,000 experience per hour when training maniacal monkeys.

The fastest Method to get to the MM1 tunnels

Ape Atoll teleport

This method is the fastest way to get to Ape Atoll dungeon; this teleport becomes available after the completion of the Awowogei section of the recipe for the Disaster Quest series.

After you cast the Apetoll teleport, run south to the Apetoll dungeon. Ensure you turn on protect from melee because of other monsters before you enter the Apetoll dungeon, When you enter the apetoll dungeon, the image below shows how you can get to the spot filled with a good number of Skeletons for training:

After a while, the Skeletons will stop being aggressive; all you have to do is run back through the way you came to the de-aggro spot shown above and then back to re-aggro them.

Ice bursting or barraging at MM2 tunnels

OSRS Ice Bursting & Ice Barraging Guide: MM1 & MM2 tunnels (6)

Ice bursting or barraging maniacal monkeys in Kruk's dungeon provide the highest magic experience rates in Old School Runescape and Kruk's dungeon is unlocked during the Monkey Madness II quest. Maniacal monkeys have up to 60 hitpoints, have a lower defense, are more aggressive, and gather in larger numbers than Skeletal monkeys that’s why you’d be able to get significantly higher experience rates when ice bursting/barraging here.. You should always pray against melee when you're in the Kruk’s dungeon because one of these maniacal monkeys can hit up to 18.

The maniacal monkeys, unlike the skeletal monkeys, have some useful drops, such as bass, banana, two doses of anti-poison, one dose of prayer potion, adamant arrow(p++), rope, and some other materials, picking some of these drops would help cut down your cost of training. This method is generally semi-AFK because you only need to drink prayer potions and magic potions when necessary unless you choose to use other methods discussed below. It is recommended to have prayer a lot higher than 43 so you can be AFK for longer periods.

Although there are maniacal monkeys throughout the dungeon, the best place to use this method is in the northernmost part of the dungeon, as shown in the image below. You can get up to 350,000 experiences per hour using Ice Barrage.

The maniacal monkeys are aggressive toward you for 10 minutes, after which you must run west into the south passage indicated below, then back to the spot to reset their aggression.

How to get the maniacal monkeys

  1. Using the Gnome glider to Ape toll, then running south
  2. Using the Apetoll teleport on the standard book and running south or the Apetoll teleport on the Arceuus book and running north

As soon as you enter Kruk’s dungeon in Apetoll, you should be in the image 1 location shown below, then you should transverse to the location in image 2 by following the yellow line. From here, you can easily navigate into the hole where the maniacal monkeys are located, as shown below.

Methods of ice bursting or barraging at MM2 tunnels

OSRS Ice Bursting & Ice Barraging Guide: MM1 & MM2 tunnels (9)

The Click-Intensive Method: This method generates the highest experience rates when ice bursting or barraging. The procedure is simple; all you need to do is click back and forth after each spell that is cast. This would make the maniacal monkeys cluster even more and you would gain even better experience rates as a result. This method may require a lot of clicks, but the experience may be worth it for you.

OSRS Ice Bursting & Ice Barraging Guide: MM1 & MM2 tunnels (10)

When you want to get better experience rates but don't want to click as much as the click-intensive method requires, click attack on the maniacal monkey in the center of a 3 by 3 or 4 by 4 cluster of maniacal monkeys. This method allows you to semi-AFK for a few minutes because you only need to attack when you are not attacking the middle of a 3 by 3 or 4 by 4 clump of maniacal monkeys, allowing you to inflict damage on maniacal monkeys within range of the maniacal monkey on which you are attacked.

Regular Afk method: This is the standard method of ice bursting or barraging, and all you need to do is turn on auto-retaliate like in the other methods and wait until the maniacal monkeys become non-aggressive before running to the de-aggro spot and back to make them aggressive again. The experience rates are lower than when using the methods above.

Dancing accounts methods: This method requires the use of two alt accounts. First, you must wait until the maniacal monkeys stop being aggressive toward the two alts, and then the second account should follow the first account to the best ice-bursting or barrage spot shown above, where the maniacal monkeys are packed. If the second account follows the first account at the right time, they will start dancing, and when you attack with your main account, there will be no need to run to the de-aggro spot to reset the aggression of the maniacal monkeys.

Useful unlocks

1 . Bonecrusher necklace

OSRS Ice Bursting & Ice Barraging Guide: MM1 & MM2 tunnels (11)

The bone crusher necklace combines the effects of the bone crusher and the dragonstone necklace to provide automatic prayer restoration while ice bursting/barraging maniacal, skeletal monkeys, or any enemy that drops bones when they die. The bone crusher necklace requires 70 prayer to equip and is made by the combination of one bonecrusher, one dragonbone necklace, and the Hydra tail which is dropped by the Achemica Hydra.

The bone crusher can be obtained as a reward from the hard Morytania Diary by speaking to the Ghost disciple in the Ectofuntus. When you kill a monster that drops bones, the bone crusher will automatically crush the bones and give you half the prayer experience that burying the bones would have given you.

The Dragonbone necklace is dropped by Vorkarth at a rate of 1/1000, and it restores prayer points as bones are being buried. When its features are combined with the Bonecrusher, which automatically crushes bones as they are dropped, you will be able to increase your prayer points whenever you equip the bonecrusher necklace and kill maniacal or skeletal monkeys, making this method suitable for ice-bursting/barraging because you would save a ton of prayer potions.

It is not a good idea to always equip the Bonecrusher necklace because it does not provide good ranged bonuses. Instead, equip the occult necklace, and when your prayer levels reach 10, equip the bonecrusher, When you have recovered all of your lost prayer points, equip the occult necklace again to receive the magic bonuses it provides. And, because the bonecrusher necklace behaves like a regular bonecrusher when not equipped, you could train prayer simply by having it in your inventory. You won’t need to bring prayer potions when using this method.

OSRS Ice Bursting & Ice Barraging Guide: MM1 & MM2 tunnels (12)

4. Royal seed pod

OSRS Ice Bursting & Ice Barraging Guide: MM1 & MM2 tunnels (14)
